BARBARA BOROWICZ

Graduated with honours from the Academy of Music in Kraków, having received her bachelor’s degree and continues her further education there in the clarinet class of Professor Andrzej Godek. She has been developing her instrumental skills attending masterclasses led by outstanding teachers e.g.: Shirley Brill, Eduard Brunner, Florent Heau. She has also worked with clarinetist Suzanne Stephens, the best performer of Karlheinz Stockhausen’s music, on his composition for clarinet solo In Freundschaft; as a result Barbara has been authorized by her to perform this work.

Barbara Borowicz, both as a soloist and a chamber musician, is the winner of several national and international music contests, including 1st prize during the 2nd International Competition for Clarinet and Saxophone in Reggiolo (Italy), 2nd prize during the 7th International Clarinet Competition ‘Saverio Mercadante’ in Noci/Bari (Italy), 2nd prize and special award for the distinguished artistic personality during the 6th International Clarinet Competition in Szczecin (Poland), 1st prize during the 13th International Juliusz Zarebski Music Competition in Łomianki/Warszawa (Poland), besides in Luxembourg, in Asti, Treviso, Taurisano (Italy), Belgrade (Serbia), Stanjel (Slovenia), Anykščiai (Lithuania), Lvov (Ukraine), in Jawor, Krasiczyn (Poland).

She has performed in Australia, New Zealand, Republic of South Africa, Poland, France, England, Croatia, Slovenia, Germany in the most prestigious concert halls, such as Sydney Opera House, or ZK Matthews Great Hall in Pretoria. She has also taken part in several premiere performances of the new works written by e.g. A. N. Tarkmann, W. Hekster, M. J. Papara – Hic et Nunc, Cracovia 5,13 for clarinet and piano; this composition was specially written for Barbara and her partner pianist Anna Miernik. Together both artists form SoundArtDuo ensemble. Their duo focuses on performing the works of Polish composers. She has also made her debut as a soloist with the Opole Philharmonic. Since 2011 Barbara Borowicz has been the principal clarinetist of CORdaCracovia and has taken part in recording of several CDs and DVDs with this orchestra. Moreover, she has run clarinet courses at The Sydney Conservatorium of Music as well as at Te Koki New Zealand School of Music in Wellington.

In recognition of her artistic and scholarly accomplishments Barbara Borowicz has received several awards and scholarships: an award for outstanding artistic achievements granted by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, a scholarship funded by the Ministry of Science, a scholarship funded by the Ministry Culture and National Heritage for outstanding scholarly achievements, a scholarship for gifted students funded by the Royal City of Krakow. She has also received artistic scholarship from the city of Poznan, Sapere Auso scholarship from Malopolska Scholarship Foundation, as well as the “Młoda Polska” (‘Young Poland’) scholarship from the Ministry of Culture.
